“I can’t play against the big players here in a few weeks, at the US Open, because I can’t practise at full power and precision, and because it will take time to completely heal,” the Austrian said in a statement on Tuesday.
The injury had limited him to just three matches at the previous two tournaments in China. He reached the last four in Shanghai and then lost to Marin Cilic in the China Open final last week.
“I’m so happy to still have my chances to get to the US Open final,” he said. “It was a very painful week in China but I hope to be back at 100% in time to play another big final in New York.”
However, the 24-year-old planned to compete in Doha in December and rejoin Austria’s Fed Cup team, which begin their defence of the title in January.
